‘Please join me in helping to create change across our Australian indigenous community…’
I must admit that when the delightfully exuberant CEO of ActewAGL, Ayesha Razzaq, asked me to be the Indigenous Marathon Project’s Corporate Patron this year, I didn’t hesitate. To be able to participate in the most famous marathon in the world is a dream come true! It wasn’t until I met with Robert de Castella over a coffee though, that the true privilege fully dawned on me. Years ago, I had seen ‘Running to America’ on TV and was aware of the Indigenous Marathon Project. I am a very proud Australian but as I listened to Rob, I was ashamed to realise how very little I knew about our indigenous society and the incredible challenges facing that culture today. This program doesn’t just make a difference to those fortunate enough to participate. It changes entire communities. Twelve selected men and women (most of whom have come from some of Australia’s most remote communities), become agents of change through an incredible journey of education, commitment and empowerment, supported by Rob and his team. I am so excited and humbled to be a part of making this all possible. There are 65 IMP Graduates so far – all remarkable, not just in their ability to train for and complete a marathon, but in their own personal growth and desire to return to their communities to make a difference in the lives of others. Projects like this one need funding, and whilst I will be funding my own journey to the NY Marathon, I am asking for any donation you can make. It isn’t about the running. The running is the simple vehicle for change. Please help us to enable that transformation in the lives of families, communities and ultimately all of us as Australians. Thank you. Any donation, big or small, would be very much appreciated. All donations are tax deductible.
