Healthy skin today and in 5 years’ time
Many of the men and women we see at the clinics have nothing wrong with their skin. They are simply looking for some advice on how to get their skin healthy again and keep it that way long term– ‘future proofing’ I suppose you could say (sounds better than anti-aging!). Is that even possible?
Absolutely! Nowadays there is a plethora of technologies and medical grade skincare that can make a dramatic difference to the health and quality of your skin. The trick is knowing what is right for you and when.
That is where we come in. It seems like there is a ‘skin expert’ on every corner with laser chains and medi-spas popping up everywhere. My advice is be careful of where you go and who you take advice from – after all, it is your face we are talking about and with no legislation on the required level of qualification or experience in NSW, if you can buy a laser, you can use one. Terrifying!
Now I am not trying to scare you off; quite the opposite. With the right advice and appropriate treatment, you can age as you were meant to – gracefully and naturally. Most of the clients our nurses see have had a tad too much sun over the years and have damaged their skin; broken capillaries, redness, pigmentation as well as a few lines and wrinkles that seem to creep around the eyes and mouth. This is all very repairable with surprisingly little treatment.
The true gold though lies in looking to the future. How do we ensure your skin is in the best condition possible in 6 months, 5 years, 10 years even… It’s all about planning for the future by ensuring you are using medical grade skincare appropriate for your skin type and needs as well as small frequent treatments that stimulate collagen, maintaining the integrity of the skin. It all sounds logical but I am constantly shocked how many people think looking after their skin involves using only anti-wrinkle injections and fillers. Let me tell you, there is nothing more aging (or odd looking) than a women who cannot move her face, has too much filler and yet has pigmented, crepey, dull looking skin. It is all about balance.
So what’s my top tip for ‘future proofing’ your skin?
Feed your skin first before embarking on any treatment. Only use medical grade skincare containing vitamins B3, C, A, and E, and use alpha and beta hydroxyl acids to restore the skins acidity. You will see the difference almost immediately. Then you can start on small, frequent treatments that can make dramatic improvements in the look and feel of your skin.
Every day I see the amazing effect taking care of yourself physically has on clients confidence and emotional wellbeing. The flow on effect throughout every aspect of their lives is profound. They just project this aura of self-assurance and having it together. People respond positively to that and are drawn to them and what they represent.
Like my clients, I don’t want to look 20 again, just simply the best I can. I think we all want that.
