Detox your skin for 2016
1. The skin is the largest organ in the body-how does it reflect your general state of health and what are the signs in the skin that your body could benefit from a detox?
We battle pollutants and toxins in the air and in our food every day and this can start to show in our skin. Our skin is one of the main organs involved in ridding the body of harmful toxins through our perspiration. Dryness, irritation, rashes, premature aging and even adult acne and abscesses can be tell-tale signs your skin isn’t happy and that it may be time to detox your body and your skin.
2. Why is exfoliation so important in helping remove toxins from the skin?
Exfoliation is simply the process of cleansing the skin and removing dead skin cells and other debris that accumulates in the pores and follicles of our skin. Toxins can also accumulate on the skin’s surface causing rashes, discoloration and dry skin. To slough away these toxins and other debris, regular but gentle exfoliation using a fine particle scrub, preferably containing lactic acid is perfect for encouraging new skin cells to emerge, rejuvenating the skin.
3. What are your top 3 skin care ingredients to help ‘detox’ or deeply clean skin?
It goes without saying that you need to use an appropriate moisturiser with SPF. But my top three skin care ingredients to help detox the skin are; a lactic acid based exfoliating scrub, a vitamin B3 serum and a serum or cream containing vitamin A.
Vitamin B3 is essential for detoxing the skin as it boosts the skin’s immunity, reducing the harmful effects of toxins on the skin cells while vitamin A increases cellular turnover and collagen production. Vitamin A essentially ‘normalises’ the skin cells again after they have been assaulted by toxins and pollutants.
4. Most people associate detoxing with hard work! But can paying a little extra attention to the skin actually make you instantly feel better as well as look better?
Absolutely! And no, it isn’t hard work. You just have to be aware of when your skin, and body for that matter, is in need of a little help. I always treat skin from the perspective of restoring health and balance. If you feed your skin the right combination of antioxidants and prevent further environmental stress, you can maintain excellent skin health and vibrancy.
5. Any other tips for starting the year with healthy, happy skin?
Make this year the year you restore the health of your skin. Healthy skin is beautiful skin. Your skin is constantly trying to repair the damage the environment has inflicted on it, but UV exposure and pollutants deplete the skin of the antioxidants needed for cellular repair and collagen renewal.
So my top tip is to feed your skin first before embarking on any treatment. Try to use medical grade skincare containing vitamins B3, C, A, and E, and use alpha and beta hydroxy acids to restore the skin’s acid mantle. You will see the difference almost immediately. Then you can start on treatments that can make dramatic improvements in the look and feel of your skin.
