Sun Damaged Skin

One of the most common ‘confessions’ our nurses hear from clients during a consultation is that they have had a miss spent youth worshipping the sun. In truth however, there aren’t too many people I have come across in all the years I have been treating clients skin, who haven’t accumulated some sun damage, even with the best of intentions. I see clients of all ethnicities every day who are experiencing prematurely aged skin, with thinner skin, pigmentation, increased redness and wrinkling, in advance of their chronological age. My job, and that of our team of nurses and doctors, is to reduce, and to some extent, reverse some of that premature aging and restore balance and health to the skin. Suzie x

What are the signs of sun damage and when should you seek help?

One of the most common signs are increased freckles and larger sun spots, or pigmentation appearing on the hands, neck, chest and face, as these areas are exposed to the sun for longer durations. Often, when our nurses view your skin below the surface using skin imaging technology, we can see more pigmentation on your driving side due to incidental sun exposure over years. Once we understand the extent and depth of the pigmentation, our nurses can give you guidance as to how to reduce it and control it into the future. The good news is pigmentation induced from sun exposure is relatively easy to lighten using a variety of treatments, giving clients a clearer complexion and a refreshed appearance.

Excessive UV exposure also leads to premature collagen loss and thinning skin. The skin appears redder, with telangiectasia, or visible vessels, which worsen with age. Collagen and elastin loss also leads to increasing lines and wrinkles, fat loss and sagging skin, all of which contribute to a ‘tired’, aged appearance.

When to seek help! Well, as soon as you can, as even adding in the right antioxidants to your daily skin care routine will help you fight existing sun damage and prevent more to come.
