If you suffer from nail fungus – you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common conditions in Australia and can be picked up easily at gyms, swimming pools and even nail salons. Typically treatment involves applying topical cream daily over a period of several months.
Fungal nail infections are more likely to occur on toenails than fingernails. The infection may begin as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your nail and as the infection goes deeper, it can cause your nail to discolour, thicken and crumble at the edge. These infections are contagious and will not clear up without treatment.
You can pick up nail infections in the showers at gyms and swimming pools or even through unsterilised equipment in nail salons. Warm, damp environments like running shoes are also perfect environments for fungi to thrive. Fingernail infections occur more often if you spend a lot of time with your hands in water or need to frequently wash your hands. You are also more likely to develop a fungal infection if you suffer from:
• Poor health/ weak immune system
• Nail biting or damage to the nails – including use of artificial nails
How we can help
Our Genesis laser passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue to damage and eventually kill the fungal organism. While only one toenail or fingernail may show infection, it’s very important to treat all the fingernail or toenails to prevent re-infection. Several treatments are often needed.
