Large open pores can make the skin look and feel thicker, duller and older than it is and the older we get, the more dilated the pores become. Blackheads can also draw attention to pores by either expanding the opening, or making them more obvious simply due to the dark colour. Similarly with whiteheads that are essentially filled with the same material as a blackhead, but remain white because they only have a microscopic opening to the skins surface and don’t become oxidised.
Pores provide a pathway for hair to grow and the skin’s natural oil to reach the surface and hydrate our skin. People with oily, thicker skin tend have larger, more obvious pores which can be exacerbated with environmentally damaged skin. Blackheads are pores that have a wider than normal opening and are filled with plugs of sebaceous oil, dead skin cells and bacteria that have chemically reacted to oxygen in the air resulting in the oxidation of melanin, giving it a black colour.
